The SMARTER Instructional Cycle was developed over 25 years ago by Keith Lenz, Ph.D. More recently, it has been recast to acknowledge the collaborative effort that is needed for instruction to reach all students, especially students with disabilities. These collaborative efforts include general education teachers, special education teachers, specialists, and students. Teachers and students alike engage in this ongoing cycle as they plan, teach, learn, and assess instruction and knowledge. In this session, participants will come away understanding the challenges we place on both teachers and students in using the term co-teaching. As unintentional as it might be, it can short-circuit the instructional cycle. Teachers and students are co-planning, co-teaching, co-learning, and co-assessing when engaged in the SMARTER Instructional Cycle. SMARTER was developed to be used with SIM, but it is not exclusive to SIM.
